I was pleasantly surprised by Tha Carter VI. Lil Wayne continues to impress with his smooth flow and creative lyrics. What I liked most about this album was the sampling and beats. There are wildly unique samples of Weezer’s “Island In The Sun” and a track with Andrea Bocelli. Types of samples you’ve never heard on rap songs before. He also features some unexpected artists including Bono, Jelly Roll, and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Then he has some more traditional features like 2 Chainz and this song with BigXthaPlug. Outside of these samples and features, there are some really fun, soulful beats that remind me of old-school Jay-Z and Kanye tracks. This was a surprisingly refreshing album from the rap icon.
